This Swiss political figure was born on May 14, 1960 in Zoug. After obtaining her baccalaureate at Immensee Gymnasium in the canton of Schwytz in 1980, she pursued a piano training at the Lucerne Conservatory. Subsequently, she decided to further her studies at Stanford (California) and Rome. She joined the Socialist Party at the age of 26. In 1988, she studied English and Spanish literature at the University of Fribourg. She also worked at a women’s shelter in the city, which influenced her political career.

She has held various positions: Member of Parliament for the canton of Bern in the National Council and the Council of States, Federal Councillor since November 1, 2010, Head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) and the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) since 2019, and President of the Swiss Confederation.
